Back home

I'm back home from the delightful trip to Maryland. Nothing too exciting happened. I got there, sadly delayed beyond where it was viable to see some relatives. So I watched the lightning storm while eating the most delicious burger and fries. On Tuesday I did the install for Children's National. They had to tinker around with the DVD before remembering to mount it. After that things went pretty smoothly. I'm proud to say I have now been lost in a bathroom. At the airport they had this giant bathroom with several sections, there were urinals in one section, and two sections of stalls and one for sinks. I eventually found my way out. The plane that I was going to get on was struck by lightning, so they had to check everything before they could take off again. So I was delayed into the next day. That night I was kind of worried that I wouldn't wake up in time. So I never really fell asleep. Instead I dreamed that people got into the room somehow. I however decided to dismiss this as crazy talk, instead assuming that a group of pranksters had telepathy and were making me think that they were in the room. On the way to the airport the bus driver told me about how he was driving a friend to the airport in a pickup. The fog was really dense so he didn't see something of a ramp that was in front of him (it was apparently some kind of lane divider) as he lifted all four wheels of the truck into the air on this thing. I imagine my brother will be somewhat impressed.

A rope lying over the top of a fence is the same length on each side. It
weighs one third of a pound per foot. On one end hangs a monkey holding a
banana, and on the other end a weight equal to the weight of the monkey.
The banana weighs two ounces per inch. The rope is as long (in feet) as
the age of the monkey (in years), and the weight of the monkey (in ounces)
is the same as the age of the monkey's mother. The combined age of the
monkey and its mother is thirty years. One half of the weight of the monkey,
plus the weight of the banana, is one forth as much as the weight of the
weight and the weight of the rope. The monkey's mother is half as old as
the monkey will be when it is three times as old as its mother was when she
she was half as old as the monkey will be when when it is as old as its mother
will be when she is four times as old as the monkey was when it was twice
as its mother was when she was one third as old as the monkey was when it
was old as is mother was when she was three times as old as the monkey was
when it was one fourth as old as it is now.
Amethyst

I was pointing out that if you dip an amethyst stone into a potion of booze it turns into fruit juice. KJ pointed out that she in no way believed me. To which I said "No really, amethyst means to keep from becoming drunk." KJ stared at me with questioning eyes. I suggested that I find identifying items in this manner wasteful. "Oh, your talking about nethack!" KJ says.

Benadryl

I've been itchy recently, and I think it is because of an allergy to something around here. As part of my combat of this I have been taking Benadryl. I was getting one such pill when KJ said "Are you taking your crotch pills?" I tried putting it in my crotch, but it didn't seem to work, so I suggested that we put it in her crotch.
KJ replies "...that will lead to pure joy and happiness, and health."

Alright, here we go.

So here is the quick of what has been up more or less for the last few weeks. I came down to San Diego with KJ a few weeks ago. At first I was in LA to see my Granny, we went to see a play, then went to see La Rondine. I didn't like it as much as La Bohem, they changed the ending so that the lady does indeed die. And I think the original ending had a lot more power in it. In any case it was fun. KJ came to pick me up Sunday morning. We got here and started cleaning like crazy. The back bedroom is really quite nice now. Yes KJ it was much the way we left it when we left. And I do like the pedestal for the penguin. There is still plenty more work to do around the room. One of the walls needs some re-plastering, and then painting, and there are still just a few boxes which should go somewhere, but we are unsure as to where yet...

Prior to leaving for San Diego we hired a replacement for Noah/me. She had been doing IT stuff for more then 10 years and just wanted somewhere to hang out for awhile. She apparently started last Tuesday, but my sources say that she has not returned since Tuesday. It is always possible that she just sneaks in and out, but that seems unlikely.

I left MMC when there was lightning starting fires all around the place. They wouldn't let me out through the park because of a fire. So I had to take the old road. It was bumpy. Before I left I saw a big spark come off of the phone panel when a bolt of lightning hit somewhere really close by. Apparently it caused a credit card machine to stop working. But it was very exciting.

Anyways, I moved down. And I'm still not exactly sure if my car developed an alignment problem part way through the drive, or if the roads of LA just suck. When the road was smooth it was fine. When there were the little rain water grooved my car would bounce up and down about twice a second. Not so cool. Anyways, I made it here and am alive and all that. I'm just about done unpacking. I still need to figure out where to put the tools that I brought. But I just found another cache of them outside. So I'm going to go look at those in a minute. Beyond that just sending out some resumes and deciding what to do. We are planning on seeing fireworks on the fourth. I really like fire works. I miss KJ, but I am excited that the plan for that is to be temporary. I hope you are all having fun. I know I am.

Odds and ends

I rode on the top of a flatbed truck. It was really pretty nifty. Nothing too exciting about it, just standing up there with the wind going by and being able to look all around. Trying to avoid getting smacked in the face by various trees. But quite nifty. I also learned what glow plugs are for on a diesel engine. And participated in pouring about 14 quarts of oil in an engine.

They had a funeral thing for Kishori. I was so right that she was in the little box. Everyone there was looking sad in one way or another, but I was having trouble not laughing at the thought of human ashes. Something about cremate is just so funny. It came in a box, that had a plastic bag in it, and it all kind of reminded me of clay, you know something that I usually play with. This was all followed up with shaking the contents of the bag into an urn. So I giggled on the inside.

Also did you know that memory doesn't always freeze the computer when it goes bad? I had never experienced it going bad in any other manner. So half a day later I ran a memory test and within 2 seconds there were about a thousand errors. So I gave it the mark of death, and went on to replace it. I still have some more work to do on that computer. I think the hard drive is on its death bed, but I'll plug it back in and see.

Here we go

Alright time for some described annoyance of bad design. So a server comes up on the monitor as down. Fair enough it happens from time to time. I get some dinner and a little after head up there to see what the scoop is. I switch the KVM over to the correct server and it is posting some kind of error (It is SCO so we really don't do anything but keep it on the network.) So I think I'll just log in and reboot it. The keyboard isn't working. OK maybe it is just that server. No the keyboard isn't working anywhere. The mouse works, as does the display, but no keyboard. OK I'll try restarting the KVM. So I unplug it. Both of them actually they are daisy chained together. Nothing happens. I can still push all the buttons as though it still had power...oh wait...Dread sets in.

I start to realize what it is that has happened, I don't want to at first. So I look around for some kind of reset switch, or anything. No, no luck. So there are 2 KVMs each with 27+ cables coming out of them. And I can see what happened while some people who were never planning on using the thing designed it:
"Hey I know why not use the peripherals as a redundant power source?"
"That sounds like a really good idea. That way everything would have to go down in order for the KVM to turn off."
"Awesome lets do it."

after unplugging 3 sets of 9 cables which all looked close to identical or identical, then plugging them all back in...for each...I have my keyboard back. However now the KVMs are working independently, which they weren't a short time ago. I sense the way to fix this is to unplug everything from the furthest one down the road and plug it all back in while plugged into the last link. I decided to work on the server first. Of course being SCO it doesn't realize that there is a keyboard anyway. So I reset it and now it seems fine. It was the night of the wonderful technologies. *SQUEE!*

I love it

I really like this quote: http://bash.org/?1582
In particular I like the fourth line.

They are having some kind of retreat. I think the idea is to relax and such, but in practice it means "breakfast" isn't until 11.

Also KJ is really awesome. And Chuck Norris can divide by zero. I'm still convinced that division by zero is possible. Well more LaCaille never did point out that division has to do with the number of time that you divide it. I always envisioned it as more of the number of things that you took away from it. I can see the logic in it being undefined, but I can also see logic in it being infinity. Now that I have written this I'm having trouble seeing how it is undefined again...Oh well it was worth a shot.

So we were talking

So KJ and I were talking about a funny thing that grazed IRC once. The point being that when the person was burried they wanted a shovel next to their grave with a sign that said "For a good time, dig." Such that necrophelia could happen with ease. KJ said that she wanted something simular. To which I said burring people is expensive so we would probably burn her. But if she really wanted I could put some of her ashes in my ass. She really liked this idea.

Anyways we were talking for a while and an hour or so the topic came back up. This time she said "Well I plan on dying when I am pretty old. So you would be old and sort of feeble. And it would be so awesome." At which point I injected that this did not sound awesome to be "sort of feeble." And she continued on her story to point out that the awesome part would be me needing help getting the ashes in my ass.

We have a very special relationship don't we?
Odds and ends

Well we have the [Ii]nternet connection back up. There are a few servers that appear to be down, or at least not on the network. So I'll probably be headed back up to the server room in a little while. Beyond that we still need to figure out which cables go to wireless devices so we can plug them into the correct VLAN. So far really not that bad. Making everything seem fine, clever girl. I like a network that can lull you into a false sense of security then break. Shows a lot of character.

The fire is still going on. I'm told that the cop down at the road block is starting to be a pain and wanting a drivers license that has to do with the area. The fire as far as I can tell is dying down. We haven't heard anything about an evac. So I think the media is just trying to suck up everything they can to continue the fear mongering.

KJ has been up to some mighty nifty programming. One would have to ask what exactly has been created, but it is all sounding pretty awesome. Also he has been keeping me up to date on exactly how cute and fuzzy the cats are being. Apparently Cat is all about going on walks. Which is new. I use to put his harness on him and he would lay there. It was kind of fun on a tile floor, if you tugged him a bit he would slide. Little Face however will have nothing to do with being outside. Apparently he seems really interested in going out until he has a leash on. At which point he doesn't want to go past the door. So there was the theory that maybe he just didn't like the stairs. So they brought him outside where he proceeded to claw up MCWheelie's back in an attempt to get back inside. KJ has fun stories.

I got RT setup a few minutes ago. Then my mind went blank as to what to put into it. Eventually I arrived at "Get a transistor to work." because those little buggers are just not playing ball with my research. I think I have the theory down, however I don't know which equation to use and which bits of the datasheet to use as my variables.

I got in touch with Adrienne, she is hanging out in San Mateo. We commiserated on the fact that while the center is in its special retreat mode we only get food at 11 and 6. Generally not cool. I think it will be finished up by Tuesday, maybe earlier. The fire on the other hand brought out some mighty tasty dinner. They just pulled out all kinds of stuff so it was kind of like a buffet with more then 3 options.

I found someone's ring today. We found the person who it belonged to and gave it back. It made me think of KJ, which made me happy.

So all is starting to shape back up. Nothing to exciting really. Dinner is in 45 minutes or so. Maybe I'll go jogging first. It is pretty cold out though. hmm...I probably wont want to jog after dinner. And I feel kind of like it now. Maybe I should go.

KJ got a call from a position that starts at 60K. I'm excited for her. It sounded like the kind of work that he really wants to be in. And it is a short commute. She said that the interview went really well and I believe is expecting to be in contact with the group soon. I hope it all works out by resolving to an awesome position.

Anyways, I'm going to go change and see what I can do about that jog. I hope you are all doing well.

Well I took the lady to the air port and was just getting into the idea of sitting around and doing just about nothing all day when I got a call that they are putting the network back together. And want me back up there. The roads are still closed, but I am told that I can tell them I am going to the center and they will let me through. Hopefully this is true. So the fire is still going but apparently not headed in the Center's direction at all.

I'll update everyone more when I can, I don't know when we will have the internet connected again so I figured I would splash what data I had.
Quick update

We pulled all the IT infrastructure. So one way or another that will be a joy to put back. I pulled out into San Jose around 6. Ryk stayed with the van full of IT stuff, and is planning on staying until a mandatory evacuation is called. At which point he will pull out into Morgan Hill. There was a huge amount of smoke, a few miles off. It was black and boiling earlier in the day. Later in the afternoon it kind of got brownish but was everywhere. And a little before I left it was starting to smell like smoke. I don't expect the fire will make it over to the center, but one never knows.

Everything is slow moving enough that no one is in any substantial danger. It is all worry about structures.

So that is my quick update. I'm fine. I brought a lady who was up for the day and is flying out of San Jose back down. Thank you everyone for your interest and concern, it is nice to know people care enough to not have me be roasted. And I hotwired a car. It was nifty.

Let's see here

Ryk came back from Mexico. He was working in IT for like two years before he had left. So he was gone for a few months and is back now. He described to me that he did not want to work in IT now that he is back. I got a call from another guy asking if we (Noah and I) wanted him back in IT. Now the only time that we really need more then one person is when everything breaks at the same time. Now that doesn't happen very often. The part that I found particularly strange is that they were asking me when really Ryk is the person to be asking on both the level of if he wants too, and IT seniority. Very strange systems are at foot around here.

I'm listening to Dido. What a great name. Some of you probably remember Bilbo. The dog that my Dad and Joan had. Well my Nonna would take care of him from time to time. And she would always call him "Dildo" It was really pretty wonderful. She is known for pronouncing things in wonderful ways. Unrelatedly we (Christopher and I) went up to Roseville for his birthday and to see our Nonna and Tatone. Christopher, Joan, Nonna, and I played Spades. For blood. Christopher wanted to make things exciting, so he and I were one team and Nonna and Joan were another. Now both Nonna and Joan are a force to reckoned with. Having them on a team was almost certain doom. Well we were playing and a little behind. But on the last hand Nonna went nil, and we got her to win a hand. Which brought us into the lead. I felt a little bad. But it was a lot of fun, and very exciting.

I went to see John on Saturday. He is awake and seems to remember everything that we have brought up. His speech is coming back. Some words he says very clearly and others are slurred. But pretty much whenever he says something it makes sense to the the situation. So he seems to realize what is going on and such. He does say "more" a lot. Apparently since Friday when he started waking up. Usually it isn't associated with anything, but sometimes he will pin something else on it which makes it make more sense. Mike came and a card game that He, Christopher, and John were playing some time ago came up. And whatever they did they couldn't beat Christopher. So Christopher said something along the lines of he is really good at it. Mike followed this up with "No you cheat." To which John immediately pointed at Christopher with a "YEAH!" It was awesome. I showed him the ASL alphabet, and he caught it really fast. So that might help. We brought a computer for him, and he knew what it was instantly. However his character recognition wasn't there yet. So he would type something that didn't match any words that we knew, but he seemed to know what it was. So hopefully that will come back soon. One thing that he really misses is eating. They have been feeding him through a tube, because he can't swallow strongly enough yet. Actually maybe today he can.

I think the strangest thing that I noticed is the hospital staff didn't seem to inform Gloria (John's Mom) about things that could happen. Like his right side is paralyzed, and likely wont get back to 100%, but no one had told here if the left side can take over for that or not. And switch handedness. So that was kind of odd, but beyond that everything seemed in order.

He has a plate in his head, so it is all kind of lumpy on his left side. But it really doesn't look that weird.

Beyond that Christopher and I once again brought up the idea of making a D&D tactical mapping program so we can play outside of meatspace. (I love that word to much. I'm really reaching to use it) Our first front of attack is to see how GCCG works, and see if we can modify what it does to our own twisted means. I told this to John, and that it was like the 8th time that we have brought up the idea. He thought it was funny. But hey, n'th times the charm.

I've been meaning to setup up an RT program just so I can write down all my projects. I think that may help me get them done. My mom has been trying to write down the things that she wants to do. Maybe she would want in on some RT action. It is like a piece of paper that follows you around everywhere that there is internet access.

We had strawberries for breakfast. They were really quite delicious. That is one thing that is nice, sometimes there is a really good selection of fruit. And that one is hard to mess up. Unless you cook it with like chicken or something. What a waste of a perfectly good pear, and chicken.

Also there is apparently a nifty air show in Watsonville this Sunday. I might go, or I might just grab some lenses and watch from here. Apparently it has only older planes, and things that people made themselves and stuff like that. Which I agree with Norman in that, it is mighty awesome. I was told there is also some holiday or some such happening up here from Thursday to Sunday? Not sure much beyond that. I imagine I'll find out soon though.

Well thank you all for all your support with John. It really helped. Hopefully everything is just getting back to as much him and he can from here on. And for generally being such awesome people. I love you all.
What now

In all of their great cleverness Vista doesn't have a good way to reset the password. I've sent a message off to Christopher, but he has yet to reply. So I may keep beating on it, or I may just see about a re-install. I would say Vista is stupid, but I know XP doesn't have an official password reset either, it has just been around long enough to have unofficial ones pop up. *Belly-ache* *Belly-ache*

Last week KJ brought me a ring that she had made for me. It is really very beautiful, both in its appearance and symbol. Several people have questioned me on it. "Where did you get that?!" "KJ made it for me." "Aww, thats so sweet. Wait did you say 'made it for you' Wow!"
or
"Your getting married?!" "Umm, no not exactly."

And here it is in a blurry picture of my hand. (I can't take a picture of anything living.)

I haven't heard anything about John. I talked with Adrienne about what was happening with John and why I wasn't really worried about it, or generally didn't have a whole lot of feeling. And she suggested that it may be that I really don't know the conclusion to the story yet, or that I don't have any control over the situation so I don't have any worry for it. They are all good points and probably all in part true. So perhaps I'll just leave it to the wind for the moment. Eventually it will come back up with more data. Hearing that from a collection of people somehow makes it easier to sit on.

My mom and aunt put together a scholarship fund for medical students as part of my granny's estate. It is going to be a surprise party in June. They are going all out in trying to make it a surprise. Yet they still haven't thought up an excuse for why they would all be going to the hospital. I imagine they will come up with some silly thing or another. Maybe we could say KJ is pregnant and going in for some medical checkup, that could be fun on many levels. I don't know if KJ will come or not. I kind of hope she does, but we'll see. I should be down in San Diego at the same time, which I think will be nice. Its a nice warm place. Speaking of which I need to hunt down more shorts, I only have a few pair.

I've been working on getting an led to blink. Because that would be way more annoying the just having it turn on. This all has something to do with transistors. And I don't want to use an integrated circuit, mostly because I don't think I have one that would work (I've just been pillaging from old junk we have around the Dungeon).

...And why does listening to the Ramones make me feel like crying?
My week

Let's see here. KJ came into town last Sunday. This all by itself made me very happy. We went to the park and found a new exciting friend. It is called the vomit-tromit. We had always ignored it before then, but my is it exciting. We played on it for awhile, then drunkly played on the rest of the playground before staggering home. That was a mighty bit of fun. We watched a ton of Scrubs. I really like Scrubs. They get some really clever bits in there.

On Monday we were meandering around making breakfast or some such. Christopher called. John had a stroke. Its funny, I don't know if he will recognize either of us. And we've known him for 12 years now. We've only heard a little bit so far. His right side is paralyzed and they needed to open his skull to allow for swelling. I don't know exactly how he is mortality wise. We were just told "He isn't out of the woods yet" which wasn't in particular reference something. Its kind of funny, I know it was KJ being there that helped keep me together. I know she loves me so much, and I love her in return. We can say it back and forth but it doesn't really describe what it means. She was able to keep me being strong and reasonable, and most importantly keep me from freaking out. Just by being there, being there to listen, being there to hold, just being there. Its weird what love really is sometimes. It is so mundane, yet it means more then all the world.

We came up to MMC and everyone thought we were siblings. Maybe I'll start spreading a rumor that we are. That could be fun. I think if anyone says anything along the lines of "When will your sister be coming back?" it is a sign that I must spread such misinformation. They had a really lame dinner on Wednesday. They do that every week or two. There is always bread and salad though. Hardly counts if you ask me.

Christopher showed me some cool things about electronics over dinner. He used some good descriptions which I could catch well. And helped to describe why it was that when you put a resistor in a circuit it shows the same voltage. Along with how capacitor work. It was pretty cool. I still have to figure out some things about parallel connections of leds. Then I will be ready to make all kinds of annoying things that light up. Which is one of my many steps in taking over the world.

I miss KJ. But I also love her, and something about how everything is falling into place and currently is feels right. It is kind of like how saying "I love you" is trying to describe something that often cannot be said. But somehow through all kinds of sadness, and life, everything feels calm, and nice. (Don't ask me about that in two minutes. It might be completely different.)
